Celebrate Philanthropy this November!

November 1, 2018 at 12:01 AM

The month of November is known for many things — the opportunity to gather with friends and family, a chance to express gratitude for life’s blessings, a time for pumpkin pie and stuffing. This month is also the perfect time to reflect on the many ways that the generosity of others impacts our lives. There are a number of events throughout the month — at Mount Holyoke and around the world — that help us to celebrate:

  • November 8: Founder's Day
On Founder's Day we celebrate the founding of Mount Holyoke, which would not have been possible without a community that supported and invested in Mary Lyon's dream. Thanks to the investment of her community — from coins and dollars, to food and furniture — Mary Lyon was able to open the seminary doors to the first class of 80 trailblazers who paved the way for the thousands of alumnae who followed in their footsteps.
  • November 15: National Philanthropy Day
National Philanthropy Day, which was founded in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan, is a chance for thousands of people around the world to come together and celebrate the many ways that philanthropy makes a difference in our communities. Through giving, volunteering or advocacy, philanthropic engagement — in ways large or small — helps to shape society and our world.
  • November 27: #GivingTuesday
#GivingTuesday is a global movement launched seven years ago to leverage social media as a way to harness the generosity of people in support of the causes and communities they care most about. In 2012, a team led by Asha Curran '95, Chief Innovation Officer and Director of the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, launched #GivingTuesday as a way of complementing the “spend spend spend” messaging of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday.* Today, #GivingTuesday has become a global movement embraced by millions.

* For those who take advantage of the CyberMonday deals, don’t forget that AmazonSmile offers a way to leverage your holiday shopping to benefit the causes you care about. When you shop through AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com), 0.5% of your purchases can be donated to your favorite charity, including Mount Holyoke. The Smile site is a mirror of the regular Amazon site, and the prices are the same. Just log on to the site using the link above, select “Trustees of Mount Holyoke College” and start shopping. (Unfortunately the proceeds the College receives through AmazonSmile cannot be tied back to a specific donor, so this would not count towards your personal giving to MHC, but it is a quick and easy way to help Mount Holyoke.)
