Madeline Fitzgerald’s interest in Mount Holyoke was somewhat of a family affair. Her older sister graduated with the class of 2012, and Madeline remembers visiting her sister on campus as a small child. “At the time, Mount Holyoke seemed like the most magical place in the world,” she recalls. As she grew older and began to consider colleges for herself, she realized that she compared all other schools to Mount Holyoke — and that they would never measure up.

Now in her third year at MHC, Madeline studies politics and plans to pursue a career in journalism. Mount Holyoke has helped her carve a path in the industry: this summer she interned at Time Magazine in New York City, thanks in part to Lynk Universal Application Funding (UAF) and an established alumna connection to the magazine.

The opportunity at Time was made possible by alumna Jane Bachman Wulf, class of 1976, who worked at both Sports Illustrated and Time Magazine during her career. Following her death in 2017, Wulf’s husband established a scholarship in her memory that allows Mount Holyoke students the opportunity to intern at one of the two magazines. As part of the Lynk program, students with qualified internships or research opportunities receive $3,000 from the College to subsidize their summer experience. “This opportunity to further my career as a journalist could not have happened without both my Lynk funding and the Mount Holyoke alumnae network,” asserts Madeline.

Madeline is grateful to the generous alumnae and friends who have helped support her Mount Holyoke experience. To them, she says, “Thank you for making it possible for everyone at Mount Holyoke to succeed; not just people from wealthy and privileged backgrounds but everyone who works hard to pursue their dreams.”
