Fundraising is an integral part of Mount Holyoke, allowing the College to provide excellent education from generation to generation. The offices responsible for this important task have changed and shifted throughout Mount Holyoke’s long history, but the goal remains the same: to ensure that Mount Holyoke forever shall be.

Philanthropy opens doors: a legacy of giving back

By Rachel Nix ’20 on November 22, 2019 at 1:47 PM

Philanthropy has always played a significant role in Mount Holyoke’s history. From the very beginning, when Mary Lyon traveled across New England with her green velvet purse collecting the donations and resources to open Mount Holyoke, the College has understood the importance of giving to a greater good. In the years since its founding, Mount Holyoke has remained committed to fostering a sense of community and to cultivating the understanding that the generosity of our community can create change and opportunities for decades to come. To commemorate MHC’s extensive legacy of giving, we'd like to share a new project we’ve been working on in the Division of Advancement!

Happy holidays from Mount Holyoke

By MHC Advancement on December 16, 2015 at 9:00 AM

Festive lights are up around campus and students are finishing up their coursework, eagerly anticipating the chance to connect with families and loved ones over the winter break. In this season of giving and good will, many of us are thinking about the ones with whom we share fond memories and those who made a difference in our lives. Here are a few of the meaningful Mount Holyoke connections you've shared with us:

"Ally and Asmaah, you are the sisters I never had and my uncommon partners in crime. Whether we are backpacking in Eastern Europe, plotting a hiking adventure to Peru, or texting about our daily lives, I know that I can always count on you. In true Mount Holyoke fashion, you are both exceptional in every single way. Your love of travel, food, and, yes, driving, is truly unparalleled. Because we met, Ally and Asmaah, I not only know the true meaning of adventure but the true meaning of sisterly love. " —Marija Tesla '11

"Mom...because I knew you...I received a greatest gift in Mount Holyoke. First, it was a beautiful brick and ivy dream; an aspiration I had, something powerful to work toward. Then, being there, finding academic success was a miracle. Finally, as a Mount Holyoke alumna my identity has been sealed, as if in a book of life. It is a source of pride that I wear as a badge; and it is a source of connection to you that I cherish. Now and forever. Thank you for the gift of my Mount Holyoke education and identity. I’m pleased to make this gift in your honor." —Susan Lowenthal Axelrod '84

This holiday season, as we gather with family and friends to give thanks, we in Advancement would like to thank all those who have invested in Mount Holyoke to support the incredible work happening on campus and abroad. Your investment enables our students to pursue their passions, explore new cultures and ideas, and gain invaluable experience working alongside faculty or in internship opportunities around the world. You help keep Mount Holyoke a warm and beautiful place to connect and grow as a community, and solidify us as an intellectual and cultural hub.

We receive so many wonderful comments from many of you for whom Mount Holyoke remains a meaningful part of your lives. Here are just a few we'd like to share:

"I support Mount Holyoke because I want to pass forward to today's young women all of the gifts Mount Holyoke bestowed on me as a student: the education, the values, the ways of seeing, the ways of caring,  and the opportunity to develop into an adult woman on a quiet, supportive, and magnificently beautiful campus." —Ellen Safier Goodman '64

"My time at MHC was four of the best years of my life—I built relationships with such incredible, supportive faculty members, and found friends who I still talk to almost every day. MHC helped me become a better, more intelligent, and compassionate version of myself. I'll be forever grateful!" —Divya Chandramouli '14
